the causes

I’ve had this blog up and running for quite a number of years now, and I’m still a rebel with a cause, but the cause has changed slightly, or rather, the direction has changed.
The cause is now focused on more than information and awareness: it is now oriented toward solutions (or, at least, suggestions).

Exponentially rising for the past 40 years, when the human ecological footprint was last considered sustainable, the pace of consumption of natural resources has now reached a critical level.
The consensus is that mankind now lives over the sustainable capacity of the planet, meaning that the regenerative biocapacity of the planet’s ecosystems is worn out and the use of natural resources has surpassed the planet’s ability to restore or renew them.
We are repeatedly warned by environmental analysts that, if we continue to live at this pace and lifestyle, using natural resources to the same extent as before, already by 2030, over half of our needs will not be met by the planet.

It is daunting to think that we are making the habitat more vulnerable and fragile, all due to our lifestyle choices.
So now I have turned my attention more to those choices, to the trends that make us act the way we do, on an individual and communal level, and how this impacts our state of mind, our immediate surroundings, and the rest of the globalised village we are a part of.

Indeed, climate change, desertification, soil erosion, rising sea levels, droughts and floods, and the loss of biodiversity are still major issues that have already started affecting us all.
However, I believe that people are largely not concerned with those issues because they think that
1) individual actions do not matter,
2) environmental changes are not personal, and,
3) the impacts of any lifestyle changes are not immediately perceivable, and in fact, take quite a long time to come to fruition.

But we can do something.
Follow this space to understand why each 1 of the 7 billion+ of us matter.

There are a few causes that I very strongly believe in:

  1. food sustainability, in particular veganism
  2. social responsibility and community-mindedness
  3. socially-conscious consumerism and minimalism

I don’t take these lightly and the ideas that I churn are always based on thorough research, although they reflect my own analysis and interpretation.
